Linguistic Phonics / Speech to Print: Student Profile

Profile of the Student Who Will Be Receiving S2P

Student Profile:

4th grader, extremely easy to teach, very responsive to feedback, struggles with decoding longer words, mistakes shorter words, is not yet fluent with grade level text.

We will be meeting twice weekly for 45 minute sessions.

I am using the pseudonym Scout and pronouns they/them to protect identity.

Analysis: Scout is likely to be able to read 1st grade level texts for meaning, since not all goals were met for grade 2.

Next Steps: Since Scout was accurate and fluent using level 2 ORF, administer level 3 ORF to see if the accuracy goal can be met. If those goals are not met, use level 2 materials for repeated reading and monitor ORF words correct in grade 2 materials.

Analysis: Scout is not yet meeting the benchmark goals for grade 3. A lot of work in decoding, fluency, and comprehension will need to be done to help bring this student up.

Next Steps: Because Scout can read 3rd grade ORF with at least 90% accuracy, I will use this level for progress monitoring.

I wonder if Scout had a difficult time blending 3 and 4 sound words because of Zoom. The ones that were missed contained the /p/  and /s/ sounds, which are difficult to hear on Zoom.

Scout can easily segment 3 and 4 sound words.

A low score was achieved here because of part 3, which is phoneme manipulation.

In-progress learning:  Do we really need to have our students practice phoneme manipulation?

On code knowledge, Scout missed short e, ai, ou, ea, oa, ow, igh, eigh, eigh, ie, aw, ey, oi.
